Case Scenario
Layla is a community educator working with a small group of migrant adults in a basic literacy class. Over time, she notices that learners sometimes arrive distracted or low in energy. To help them settle, she begins each session with a simple check-in: learners can share one word about how they’re feeling or just hold up a coloured card (green/yellow/red). At the end of each class, Layla offers a space for voluntary reflections: “What went well today?” or “Is there anything you’d like to share before we finish?” Over time, this builds trust. Learners open up more, and one learner later shares that the check-ins helped her feel safe without needing to talk.
Reflective prompts:
• How can check-ins support learner well-being without requiring personal disclosure?
• What non-verbal strategies could I use to notice emotional needs in the group?
• How do I create a safe learning space while respecting boundaries?
